Service Background

To minimize public exposure to hazardous substances contained in electrical and electronic products, the Swedish Ministry of Finance issued a new ordinance (2016:1067) on November 24, 2016—specifically, the *Ordinance on Tax on Certain Electronic Products* (abbreviated as LTCE). This ordinance officially entered into force on April 1, 2017, and the collection of taxes on controlled products entering the Swedish market commenced on July 1, 2017. The ordinance mandates an investigation into the presence of specific hazardous substances within products; based on the detected levels of these substances, companies may apply for tax reductions. Ordinance SFS 2022:1774, issued on December 17, 2022, amended the legislation by revising the categories of taxable products, taxation criteria, and methods for tax reduction, while also removing the previously specified list of substances. These amendments took effect on July 1, 2023; currently, companies that meet the specified criteria for tax reduction may apply for a tax discount of either 50% or 95%.
