Service Background
What is the WEEE Directive?
WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) is a directive concerning end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment. The current EU WEEE directive bears the number 2012/19/EU; it officially entered into force on August 13, 2012. Its objective is to reduce the volume of waste electrical and electronic equipment generated, and to promote the recovery, reuse, and recycling of such waste.
On July 24, 2012, the EU published the new Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive 2012/19/EU, which officially took effect on August 13, 2012. The new directive mandates that, effective August 15, 2018, virtually all electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) products must be regulated according to the six categories specified in Annex III of the directive.
The requirements for EEE producers primarily encompass three aspects:
1) EEE products must meet the material reuse and recovery rate requirements specified for their respective product categories in Part 3 of Annex V;
2) The directive requires EU Member States to establish a register of producers—in accordance with Article 2—which includes producers supplying EEE via distance selling (e.g., online sales). This register serves to monitor compliance with the requirements of this directive. Producers supplying EEE via distance selling must register in the specific Member State where their customers are located (registration is required individually for each country and is not universally transferable); if such a producer fails to register in the Member State where their customers are located, they must register through an authorized representative;
3) EEE products must bear the "crossed-out wheeled bin" symbol.
